It’s not a big buzz, because this retreat is not just about bees. It’s a retreat to rest, reconnect with nature, and come together in a group. And then also, we’ll take some [optional] time each day to talk about bees (and the different species we care for here), as well as do some bee-related activities, such as preparing swarm traps, checking on the colonies, a little honey extraction or perhaps even a colony split (if conditions allow). We’ll also make some pure beeswax candles for you to take home.
You won’t come out of this retreat ready to be a beekeeper – but hopefully you WILL come out of it being absolutely fascinated by them, and better equipped to take care of them in general.
- 7 nights accommodation at the retreat centre
- Daily meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner)
- Optional daily workshops about bees
- 1 x Beach trip
Whilst you might have heard quite a bit about honeybees over recent years, we’re not just going to be talking about them – we have many stingless bee species here onsite and they all have unique and fascinating characteristics too.
You’ll learn about both solitary and eusocial bee species, which ones adapt well to boxes and which ones don’t, what defense mechanisms they employ (and who are their biggest enemies), how to identify some of the more common bee species and how to safely move them if they’re in a place you don’t want them to be. We’ll also talk a little about different styles of honeybee keeping that exist and what each of them looks like. You’ll also get to taste a variety of honeys, from different species to compare and contrast the different flavour profiles.
Depending on what’s happening at the time too, you might also get the opportunity to be part of a bee rescue, bee removal or colony split. We’ll not only set up swarm traps for different bee species, but we’ll also talk about how you might go about being ready to catch a swarm.
Outside of the bee-focused workshops, you’ll also have plenty of time to unwind, explore the waterfalls, go for hikes and we’ve even got a beach trip planned in there too. The movement platform will also be available to you if you feel like getting up and moving your body in specific ways before starting the rest of your day.
Considering the ongoing pandemic, we are requiring that you be fully vaccinated in order to register and participate in this event. This is to ensure the safety of our other guests and of our staff and team. If you have a high antibody count from a previous SARS-CoV2 infection, you may be exempt from the vaccine depending on your count – however you must re-take a test 1-month before the trip, to ensure that your antibody count is remaining at high levels. Please contact us if you have any questions about this before registering. Upon registration we will request proof of vaccination.
Also note that your flights/travel to and from the centre are not included.
If you secure your place with a deposit, we’ll contact you as soon as possible to set up your payment plan arrangements. To read through the payment plan policies in advance, please see this page.
